Review

"Every wise webmaster knows the more links you have to your site, the more traffic you'll get - so increasing the number of links to his site, really is a webmaster's number one promotional priority."

Who said that?

I did... It might sound stupid to quote myself, but I've long put great store in building up the number of links to your site as a method of increasing traffic. While I'm absolutely sure that I'm not the only webmaster who believes this - one thing that has always struck me as odd is how little linking strategies are discussed both in forums and in marketing books and courses.

Thus, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is at least one web site that is focused on helping webmasters get more links to their site: Linking101.com.

Linking101.com contains a collection of resources to help with link building including articles, various resources, an ASP script to help with managing links, and a downloadable e-guide (e-book): "Link Building Basics E-Guide"

"Link Building Basics E-Guide" contains some excellent articles (both embedded in the e-book or as web site links) which should help beginner and intermediate level webmasters better understand important topics such as "link popularity" (important for getting search engine traffic), as well as links to, and explanations of, many online resources (including many sites I was not previously aware of). I found these links to online resources useful and interesting, but I would have liked to see more of the author's opinions of each site/service he mentioned. That said, overall, I would say there is some extremely valuable and helpful information here.

The emphasis in "Link Building Basics E-Guide" is very much towards swapping and maintaining quality link exchanges with other sites, and there doesn't seem to be much mention of different ways to get other sites to link to you (for example, by paying them or providing free content/services they can use by linking). This should not be considered as a criticism, as the e-guide is tightly focused on its chosen topic.

Putting on my ultra-critical hat, the only real issue that I would raise is the organization of the E-Guide might appear slightly disjointed to some readers. The guide starts with a truly excellent section called "How to Use This E-Guide" which is really a summary of the author's recommended link-building strategy. This leads into other pages of the guide, but feels to me like a separate presentation from the articles etc. I think it might have been a little clearer to intersperse (or duplicate) at least part of this information between the articles and resources pages to avoid the need for the reader to jump around as much.

Conclusion

I would summarize "Link Building Basics E-Guide" as being a well written, clear, and cleanly presented guide to an important (but relatively rarely discussed) topic. Recommended.

The Linking101 web site contains some excellent information that you can read even if you do not purchase the guide - in fact, I would recommend you take a look round the site, and then can decide if the E-Guide would be a worthwhile addition to your library.
