Review Of Hitting The Search Engines

Highly Recommended

Quick Summary

Review

This a fairly short (11 pages including the cover page) PDF format eBook. Written by Peter J. Clark, it tells you the strategy that he used to drive traffic to 5 different business web sites, using search engine listings (in fact Peter Clark says he uses all free listings, plus one service that costs $2.50, once per month).

The value of this book is really in the text, which takes you step-by-step (and in a surprising level of detail) how to design web pages that search engines will love.

Sure, in 11 pages, you ain't going to get the level of detail (and range of options) that you might get in some larger tomes (see our Search Engine Marketing resources), but then again what you do get in this eBook (and you don't in many much longer books) is:
  1. Step by step instructions

  2. You are told exactly how to design search engine friendly web pages
Additionally towards the end of the book, Peter Clark gives some brief suggestions (with a few links) on submitting to search engines.

Finally, the copyright date on this eBook is 2003. However, I don't think it is dated, and the core of the book about designing search engine friendly pages, in my opinion still applies as much as it ever did.

Conclusion

I won't say that this is the only search engine marketing book that you ought to buy, but I will say that you ought to consider it if any of the following apply:
  • You know nothing about search engine positioning and want to get the basics under your belt - and starting increasing your site's traffic.

  • You've read other books about search engine positioning, and came away with the impression that it's all incomprehensible techno-babble.

  • You've read other books about search engines, but didn't come away with a clear idea (and action plan) about how to get started.
I also won't pretend that this is the only search engine book that you will ever need. It almost certainly isn't. As get deeper and deeper into search marketing, there almost certainly will be additional topics, not covered in this eBook, that you will want to learn about. But, before you get to all that stuff, this eBook is a darn good starting point.

In short, my overall rating is therefore highly recommended.
