Review Of JavaScript Magic

(Review prepared - March 2005)
Recommended

Quick Summary

Review

The first thing that I need to say, is before you read this eBook you need make sure you have enabled JavaScript into Internet Explorer (you can do this by right clicking on the desktop 'e' icon and doing Properties, or by starting Internet Explorer and choosing Internet Options on the View or Tools menu). This should have been rather an obvious point, given the title of the eBook, but I forgot to do it!

Anyway, once you start reading what you get is a fairly short book that gives clear non-technie instructions on how to implement quite a number of useful features using JavaScript and DHTML. Instructions are included (for example) on how to create PopUps, how to highlight text, how to change text spacing, how to implement a password protected page using JavaScript, etc.

This book doesn't attempt to be, and is by no stretch of the imagination, a complete guide to JavaScript or DHTML. I would say, it's better for that - in that there are tons of such reference books available from any decent book store (but of course many such books are nearly incomprehensible even to programmers).

The copyright date of this eBook indicates that it was prepared in 2002. However, all the codes that I tried, seemed to work fine in 2005, so I don't think it's dated at all. There are a number of hyperlinks to web sites in the eBook, but I was only able to find one which links to a web site that no longer exists (of course it's possible that there may be others which no longer works).

Conclusion

Overall, I think this is a pretty good eBook. It's clear and understandable, even for the non-programmer, and thus achieves its goal of showing non-techies of how to use DHTML and JavaScript to enhance their sites.

I would say the book is very goal-orientated. By this, I mean that if you want to achieve one of the tasks covered by the text, the book will show you how - but, however, if you are looking for a complete tutorial/reference on DHTML or JavaScript, then this isn't it.

My rating for this eBook is therefore recommended.
