Review Of PopUpMaster Pro 2.0

(Review prepared - June 2003)
Editor's Choice

Quick Summary

Review

Love 'em or hate 'em, pop-ups, pop-unders / pop-behinds, and exit consoles are an increasingly prevalent and popular form of advertising and marketing tool used on the web.

And the reason they are popular? Because they usually work incredibly effectively.

Some possible uses of pop-up windows include:
  • Perhaps the best known form - they can be used to show specially designed advertising materials. A lot of sites, including some of the big name sites, use them as they can often generate more revenue using pop-ups than they can using banners.
  • They can be used to collect opt-in subscribers (at a rapid rate) for your ezine or newsletter.
  • They can be used when a visitor leaves a sales site, perhaps to make a special offer or to present a Lift Letter.
Pop-up windows of all types are implemented using JavaScripts, however getting them right can be incredibly troublesome. How big is the pop-up? Where is it displayed on the screen? Which window attributes should the pop-up have (toolbars, menus, etc.)? Should it pop-up on entry or exit? How frequently should it be displayed (once per visitor, once per day, etc.)? There are just too many combinations!

Until I saw this package I don't believe that I'd never seen any general purpose [covering all the combinations you might want] pop-up code that was remotely close to plug-and-play.

The core of this package is an innovative Windows program (note: requires Internet Explorer 5 or later): You simply slot in the options you want and out comes the exact JavaScript code for your requirements! Very easy, very quick and ideal for a busy webmaster.

Also included with the package are a number of bonuses including a JavaScript bookmarking script, an anti-right click script, and various templates for pop-ups. One other bonus (and a nice one at that) is the "Opt-in Subscriber System" which helps with collecting opt-in email addresses into your Auto-Responder.

All the items in the package are nicely put together and clearly presented. I found the instructions well written and easy-to-follow. The author, Steve Shaw, has gone a great job of presenting quite complex information in an easily digestible form. That said, some (basic) familiarity with HTML and making a web site is assumed throughout PopupMaster Pro, so this isn't for the absolute beginner.

Conclusion

Assuming you are at least familiar with the basics of making a web page, and you have Internet Explorer 5 or later, then if you want to exploit the power of Pop-ups, this would be a great place to start!

Overall I have no hestitation in highly recommending Popup Master Pro, and in fact making it an Editor's Choice.
